History
The construction of the church, apparently, began under the Grand Duke Gediminas until 1323, when Novogrudok was still the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania . Around 1316, the city became the chair of the first Lithuanian Orthodox Metropolitan Theophilos . Perhaps the church was built a little later, it was erected by the son of Gediminus Koryat , who in the middle of the XIV century owned the Novogrudok specific princedom [1] .
In the 2nd half of the 14th century, the building was rebuilt - four pillars were added in the center. In 1416, a cathedral was held here with the participation of the bishops of Polotsk, Chernihiv, Lutsk, Vladimir-Volyn, Przemysl, Smolensk, Turov and Kholm. At the suggestion of Grand Duke Vytautas, the cathedral ordained Metropolitan Gregory Tsamblak, separate from the Moscow Patriarchate, and declared autocephaly of the Orthodox Church in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania . Later, the church became the department of the Metropolitan Patriarchate of Constantinople .
Since the 16th century, the miraculous icon of the Mother of God of Novogrudok was kept in the church. In 1581-1775, meetings of the Lithuanian Tribunal were held here.
In the XVII century, the church was rebuilt in the late Baroque style . She later suffered a fire. In the 1870s, the temple was dismantled into bricks.
In the 1970s, archaeological studies of the foundations of the church were conducted.
Architecture
The first church was cruciform in plan and had a small size of 13.5 × 13.5 m. Inside, four pillars held a drum with a dome . The two side naves and apse had uneven arches. The walls of the church were of red and burnt bricks, the side ledges were decorated with blocks of yellow-green tuff .
As a result of the 17th century perestroika, the volume was extended to the west, and the apse was increased. A tower of complex configuration was built over the south wall. The facades were decorated with curly stucco cornices, niches, rods and many others [2] .
