Biography and Contribution to Science
He was elected an academician ( 1833 ) and president ( 1856 - 1857 ) of the Paris Academy of Sciences. The son of Etienne Geoffrey Saint-Hilaire . Known as the author of works on teratology, taming and acclimatization of farm animals. In the history of world science, a special place of Isidore Geoffrey Saint-Hilaire is the authorship of the first year of general biology ( 1840 ), translated into many languages of the planet. The two-volume “General Biology” was published in Russian in St. Petersburg in the translation of A. P. Bogdanov in ( 1860 - 1861 ).
Considered the founder of scientific acclimatization in the world, published in 1829 his first scientific treatise in this field. Among later works, mention should be made of the Rapport generale sur les questions relatives a la domestication et a la naturalization des enimaux utiles 1849 ; "Domestication et naturalization des animaux utilas", 1854 ; "Lettres sur les substance alimentaires et particulierement sur la viande de cheval", 1856 . In 1854 he organized the Paris Acclimatization Society with private funds. Five years later, the first acclimatization garden in Europe appeared in which experiments were conducted on vast territories with overseas animals: a llama, a yak, angora goat, etc. But, despite the large amount of invested funds, these animals could not be adapted in Europe for further commercial rearing. More successful were studies on the transfer of European animals to other parts of the world. So it was possible to successfully acclimatize the Portuguese oyster ( Ostrea angulata ) on the shores of France.
