Biography
Born in 1715 in Dresden [1] .
In 1750 he worked in Paris [2] . He was invited from Vienna by the Academy of Sciences in 1761 to help G. F. Schmidt to strengthen the supervision of engravers; at the same time he taught copper engraving at the Academy of Arts as an associate professor under EP Chemesov [1] .
In 1763 he was dismissed from service and went back to Vienna [1] .
Date of death unknown [3] (until 1799) [4] .
Creativity
During his stay in Russia he was engraved [1] :
- portrait of the French ambassador from the original L. Tokke [5] ;
- a generational portrait of Peter III from the original by F. S. Rokotov [K 1] .
Abroad, he made the following works [1] :
- Frederick III, from a portrait of Hubert;
- painter , from a drawing by S. Eisen [7] ;
- Michaelis, seller of prints, from a picture by [2] ;
- “Our Lady with the Savior” (“Madonna and Rose”) for the Dresden Gallery from a picture by Parmeggiano [8] [9] ;
- "The death of St. Joseph ”for the gallery of Count Bruhl from the painting of Jose de Ribera [9] ;
- four engravings depicting the seasons, from paintings by A. Kern
- “The Girl in the Mirror”, copper engraving from the painting by J. Rau [K 2] .
Comments
- ↑ The portrait of Peter III remained unreleased, according to the testimony of Y. Shtelin , due to dissimilarity, and as noted by D. A. Rovinsky - due to the accession to the throne of Catherine II [1] . The engraving was stored at the Academy of Sciences [1] , now in the section “Russian Art and Culture” of the Hermitage (not represented in the permanent exhibition) [6] .
