Sports career

He started swimming at the age of 14, but only in 1963 did he engage in this sport professionally. Represented ASK sports club Vorwärts (Potsdam). Specialized in breaststroke. At the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo (1964) on the 200-meter did not qualify. In 1965, for the first time he became the two-time champion of the German Democratic Republic: 200 and 400 m. Subsequently, he won three times at distances of 100 m (1967, 1971 and 1972) and 200 m (1967, 1969 and 1972).

In 1966, he won a bronze medal at the European Championships in Utrecht at a distance of 400 m with integrated swimming. At the Summer Olympics in Mexico City (1968), he again failed to qualify for the finals. Two years later, at the 1970 European Championships in Barcelona, ​​Katsur won the competition in the 200-meter breaststroke, as well as in the relay 4 × 100 m integrated swimming.

At his third Olympics - in Munich (1972) he did not qualify for the 100-meter breaststroke, and at the 200-meter he became the eighth. In the combined relay 4 × 100 m won the silver medal.

Further career

Until 1987, he served in the Navy of the GDR and held the position of youth coach of ASK Vorwärts (Potsdam). In 1987 became the head of the figure skating federation at SC Karl-Marx-Stadt. After the reunification of Germany, he worked as a pool manager and coach in Würzburg, and then sold equipment and devices for gyms. In 2000 he became chairman of the Association of German Olympians and a personal member of the German NOC. Two years later, he faced accusations of collaborating with the Stasi .

For several years he was married to the swimmer Petra Tyumer .
