Critic Vl. Matusevich in the article "Against the Current" about Danish cinema in the rubric "Foreign Cinema" ( Soviet Screen Journal No. 12/1963) wrote:
The film drew attention with a bold and serious turn of the theme that had previously appeared in Danish cinema only as a superficial response to the “fashionable” headline of the newspaper chronicle, the theme of embittered and blind rebellion of youth against compromised petty-bourgeois ideals, against the ideological and moral futility of the capitalist world order. Previously, only the external side of the phenomenon was depicted, the scandalous adventures of the local “dudes” - “ledeyake” were savored. In "The Duel" Thomsen tried to reveal the social nature of these phenomena.
The poetics of "Duel" is demonstratively traditional: a love triangle, situations develop according to all the rules of active, intense drama. The central character, Mikael, a Copenhagen student who hides his confusion and bitterness under the guise of a sated cynic, at first also seems traditional. But all the more obvious is the unusual and uniqueness of the fundamental ideological content of the work.
The fact is that it was Mikael, despite his outward resemblance to the all-rejecting representatives of “angry” youth, who turned out to be the only defender of the simplest, eternal spiritual values - love, poetry, art. He is the only one who actively rejects moral decay, unprincipled immorality, corroding society. Desperate hero to purity, naturalness and harmony, his unequal battle with the world of living corpses filled with drama, get the outcome in an intense, eventful plot, in sharp polemical dialogues.
