The classifier is a special separator for the separation of bulk mineral materials into granulometric fractions , which is able to sort the particles into classes by size, density or shape.
Types of classifiers
Depending on the type of processes used, gravitational, centrifugal, electric and other separators are distinguished. Depending on the used environment in which the classification workflow is conducted, hydraulic and [[Air classifier | air]] classifiers are distinguished. Hydraulic systems without moving parts (pyramidal or conical) were widely used until the early 50s of the XX century. Their advantage was the ability to accurately classify small portions of thin products. Air classifiers, in turn, are divided into centrifugal and chamber [1] .
To prepare ore for flotation concentration, the most widespread are wet mechanical classifiers of a rowing (rack) or spiral type, in which the settled material is removed with the help of spirals or slats. Often they are used in combination with rod or ball mills when crushing ore for continuous extraction of fractions of fairly finely ground [1] .
In powder metallurgy , mechanical classifiers are most often used (sieves, vibrating screens, etc.) [2] .
