Tectonic conditions of the region

The Philippine tectonic plate borders on the larger Pacific and Eurasian plates and the smaller Sunda plate . The Philippine plate is unusual in that its borders represent almost all of the convergence zones of the plates. The Pacific Plate is subducted into the mantle south of Japan, under the island arcs of Izu-Bonin and Mariana , which extend over 3,000 km along the eastern border of the Philippine Plate. This subduction zone is characterized by rapid convergence of plates and high seismicity spreading to depths of more than 600 km. From this vast convergence zone, strong (M> 8.0) earthquakes can occur here. It is believed that the low release of seismic energy is the result of weak coupling along the plate interface [3] .

South of the Mariana Arc, the Pacific Plate is subducted beneath the Yap Islands along the Yap Trench. The Ryukyu subduction zone is associated with a similar zone, the Okinawa Depression [4] .
