Description
The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy was founded by philosopher James Feather in 1995, which created a nonprofit organization to provide accessible and academic information about philosophy [2] [3] . In the summer of 2009, the entire website was redesigned and switched from static HTML pages to WordPress , an open source publishing platform [4] .
Currently, the chief editors are the philosophers James Fizer and Bradley Dowden [5] [2] .
The target audience of the IEP is students of philosophy, as well as scientists who are not specialists in this field, so the articles are written in an accessible style. They consist of an overview, the main body of the article, and annotated bibliography. Articles can be searched either by alphabetical index, or through a search using a mechanism from Google (search engine) [2] .
Criticism
The American Library Association has included the Internet Philosophy Encyclopedia in its list of top free reference sites; [6] The IEP is one of the recommended online resources for the philosophy of the Federation of Australasian Philosophy in Schools Associations [7] . EpistemeLinks calls the IEP one of the “outstanding resources” of Internet philosophy [8] . In general, the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy is listed as a reliable resource in the Cambridge University Philosophy Guide [9] .
According to SimilarWeb , the IEP website is used two to three million times a month. About 75% of views are carried out after searching on the Internet, 18% - through direct access, and 5% - through referrals [10] .
