General E Dantas Barreto

Personnel military. In his youth he joined the army of the Brazilian Empire. He participated in the Paraguayan War , the suppression of the uprising of the Brazilian Navy (1893-1894). In 1897, with the rank of lieutenant colonel, he commanded a brigade during the Canudos War .

During the reign of President E. da Fonseca, he served as Minister of War (from November 15, 1910 to September 12, 1911). As the head of the military department, he faced serious problems: firstly, the so-called da Chibata revolution, when, mainly, the dark-skinned sailors of the main ships of the Navy in November 1910 rebelled against corporal punishment, which were still used in the Brazilian fleet and threatened to bombard the capital then Rio de Janeiro . Then the rebellion was suppressed by the government and a partial amnesty of the participants.

However, in December of that year, a new uprising of marines broke out on an island in Guanabara Bay . Several expeditions sent there did not bring any success, which led to his resignation.

From December 19, 1911 to December 18, 1915 he was the Governor of the State of Pernambuco, the Senator of Brazil. He ran for president of Brazil.

Creativity

The author of a number of scientific works, military studies and historical novels, left extensive information on the Brazilian military campaigns of that period.
