Biography

Mantegna was born around 1431 in the Italian town of Isola di Cartura near Venice in a lumberjack family. In 1441 he was adopted by a connoisseur of antiquities and artist Francesco Svarchone . He studied fine art, as well as Latin under Squarchone, who aroused his interest in antiquity. In 1445 he was recorded in the workshop of the painters of Padua .

At the age of 17, Mantegna achieved independence from Scvarchone in court and has since worked as an independent artist. The first major work of the artist was the painting of the Ovetari chapel in Padua together with Niccolo Pizzolo . In his youth he was influenced by the Florentine school , in particular Donatello .

In 1453, Mantegna married the daughter of Jacopo Bellini Nicolosia (Nikoloz). In 1460 he became a court painter at the Dukes of Gonzag and remained in this position until his death.

In 1466–1467 Mantegna visited Tuscany , and in 1488–1490 Rome , where at the request of Pope Innocent VIII he decorated his chapel with frescoes. [one]

In his painting, he followed the tradition of the Florentine Masaccio , but preferred a more stable temperament, as was customary among the masters of Venice.

Mantegna died on September 13, 1506 in Mantua. His ashes rest in the basilica of Sant Andrea .

One of Italy's largest humanists, Mantegna was a connoisseur and collector of ancient art. Thanks, among other things, to a deep understanding of antiquity, Mantegna became a radical innovator in painting.
