History
The cathedral was built in 1833-1838 according to the project of the Russian architect Avraam Ivanovich Melnikov at the expense of the Bulgarian community of the city. After the construction was completed, Emperor Nicholas I presented the cathedral with 12 bells of different sounds. The interior painting was performed by Pavel Alekseevich Piskaryov in 1912-1914 [1] .
January 26, 2012 the cathedral was seriously damaged in the fire and lost the dome [2] [3] . The cause of the fire has not been established. It is assumed that she could become negligent workers who carried out repairs, or arson [1] . In Bulgaria , a fundraising campaign was launched to rebuild the cathedral [4] . By the summer of 2015, the dome was externally restored and frescoes restored [5] . In 2016, the temple was reopened for parishioners [1] . In 2017, 2.5 million hryvnias were allocated from the state budget to strengthen the facade of the building [6] . On September 30, 2018, the great consecration of the restored cathedral took place, led by the Patriarch of Alexandria Theodore II and Metropolitan Onufry of Kiev [7] .
