In the older futarka (ᚨ), it denotes the sound [ a ] and its reconstructed name * ansuz - “god” or “representative of the genus of aces ”.

In the younger futarka (ᚯ, ᚬ) it is called As or Oss ( as ) and can mean sounds [ ɔ ], [ æ ], [ o ] and nasal [ ɔ̃ ].

Also, three Anglo-Saxon runes come from it: ᚩ (ōs, “god” or “as”, sound [ ɔ ]), ᚪ (āc, “oak”, sound / a /), ᚫ (æsc, “ash”, sound [ æ ]).

In the punctured futarka, several characters come from this rune: ᚰ [ ɔ̃ ] and ᚮ [ ɔ ].

It personifies the order, the Ases were considered to be the defenders of in Scandinavian mythology. It is identified with the word, knowledge in general and God Odin , who gained knowledge by tasting the Honey of poetry .
