Biography

Born in Valga in the family of Baptist pastor (1927-2017), consisting of six children, was the eldest of four sons [2] [3] . Subsequently, the Hanni family moved to Kohtla-Järve [4] .

Hanni's parents were fanatical religiosity , did not smoke, did not drink alcohol, did not swear. They wanted the eldest son to also become a priest [4] . They raised their children in strictness, in accordance with the Bible: before eating and at bedtime they were forced to read prayers, kneeling, every Sunday they brought to worship in the church, they flogged the rods for any offense. Johannes-Andreas Hanni later stated that he hated his parents, especially his father, because of the abuse [2] [3] .

The teenager was prosecuted , was sentenced to imprisonment . He served his sentence in a juvenile colony in Viljandi . In 1978, he was again convicted, sentenced to 3 years in prison [2] .

On December 11, 1981, she married 23-year-old Pilla Toomla, whom she had known since she was 13, she was also from the Baptist family, and corresponded while serving her sentence in the Viljandi colony. Pille lived in Tallinn , worked as a trolley bus driver. After the wedding, Hanni also moved to Tallinn, got a job as a waiter in the restaurant of the Palace Hotel [2] [3] .

He had a penchant for bisexuality , openly cheating on his wife with other men and women. During an intimate relationship, he liked to wear lingerie (nightgown, bra) [2] [3] .

Murders

On the night of March 6, 1982, in the Nõmme district of Tallinn on Valdeku Street, Hanni killed, with seven stabs, a sailor from the island of Saaremaa, Eimar Vibo. He took shoes, documents, a purse, a wristwatch and a silver ring with the initials “EV” from the victim. In addition, the killer cut out a part of the thigh from a dead body and brought it home. He told his wife about the crime and stated that he wanted to taste human flesh. Together they fried the cut out part of the body. Subsequently, Pille Hanni recalled that a sharp smell emanated from a piece of human flesh during frying, and that the pan could not be washed and had to be discarded [2] [3] . The maniac’s wife will be aware of her husband’s subsequent crimes [4] .

During the murder investigation, local residents said that on the night of the crime, dogs in the courtyards of private houses made an alarming bark. They also found a taxi driver who drove down Valdeku Street that night and saw a fight between two men. According to the relatives of the victim, a description of the stolen things was compiled. The murder of Eimar Vibo was taken under control by the First Deputy Minister of the Interior of the Estonian SSR [2] .

In the evening of May 22, in Johvi, the maniac climbed into a private house on Lennuki Street, with the help of four blows of a knife, he killed the 75-year-old Belarusian pensioner Ivan Sivitsky and cut off his genitals, which he carried with him. Also, the criminal took away a faux leather coat and a flannel shirt from the house of the murdered [2] [3] .

The investigation into the murder of a pensioner in Johvi was carried out by the police department of Kohtla-Järve district . It was found that Ivan Sivitsky was in conflict with his three sons-in-law. One of them fell under suspicion - the previously convicted unemployed alcoholic and rowdy Vitaly Shamak. He was soon detained. During a search in the house of the suspect, four knives and bloody clothes were found. Vitaly Shamak said that at the time when his father-in-law was killed, he was drinking with friends. They confirmed that the suspect was not involved in the murder. Initially, the murder of Ivan Svitsky in Johvi was not associated with a similar murder of Eimar Vibo in Tallinn [2] .

At the end of July in the Harju region , in the forest between Laagri and Saue , the maniac raped and killed 45-year-old Yevgenia Koltsova with three stabs. An old light pink jumpsuit, 30 kopecks and a bus ticket [2] [3] were taken from the murdered woman.

Initially, no one was looking for Evgeny Koltsov, she was an alcoholic and did not work anywhere. Her body was discovered only two months later, by which time it had been severely damaged by wild animals. The identity of the murdered woman was determined by the Russian-language newspaper found at the crime scene, which indicated the address of the subscriber, and the headscarf that the daughter of the murdered woman identified [2] .

Recent Crimes

Fearing that his wife would extradite him to the police, Hanni decided to kill her. On the night of August 2, when she was sleeping, the maniac struck her two blows with a hammer on the head and face. But at that moment she regained consciousness. Fearing that the screams of his wife would wake the neighbors, the killer abandoned his plan. He made a dressing and delivered her to the emergency room, where he said that a woman was attacked by a stranger in Glen's park [2] [3] .

After the attempt, Pille Hanni began to consider the possibility of reporting her husband to the police and kept evidence - a hammer and bedding with traces of blood [2] [3] .

To prevent his wife from extraditing him to the police, Hanni decided to commit a new murder with her. Spouses considered options for killing, followed by an act of cannibalism, a child or a student. As a result, they decided to choose a taxi driver as a victim. The crime scene was the Tallinn Nymme district. Pille Hanni had to open the car door so that her previously convicted husband would not leave fingerprints , distract the driver's attention, and after the murder drive the car from the crime scene to the end of Tiahetorni street, the maniac himself could not drive. Spare clothing was prepared to change after the murder [2] [3] .

On the evening of September 2, the couple decided to implement their plan. The maniac handed his wife a knife, which she hid in her purse. At the Nõmme stop on the Pärnu highway, they tried to catch a taxi. The first taxi driver to stop refused to go to the specified address. The second taxi driver Alar Qiwi agreed to give the spouses a ride. He took them to Eere Street. Pille Hanni left the Volga to, according to legend, go to a friend. At that time, Johannes-Andreas Hanni, who was sitting in the back seat, stabbed the taxi driver in the neck with a knife, but he was not fatal: Alar Kiwi managed to grab the knife blade and pull it out of his neck. Pille Hanni, who was at that moment near the open front door of the car, did not dare, despite her husband's demands, stab the driver with a knife. The wounded taxi driver managed to open the door and escape. The killer tried to chase him. Alar Kiwi was able to get to the first house, where local residents helped him, called an ambulance and police. Pille Hanni drove the Volga away from the crime scene. The car was thrown on Kaskede Avenue. The prey of the criminals was the driver’s jeans jacket and 27 rubles [2] [3] .

Arrest and death

At the beginning of October, Pille Hanni, at work on a typewriter, drew up a confession statement to the head of the Tallinn Criminal Investigation Department. This text was discovered by one of his work colleagues, who was suspicious of the mention of three murders and two attempts, and he turned to the police [2] [3] .

On October 10, Johannes-Andreas Hanni was arrested. He was called into the office of the director of the Palace Hotel, where police officers were waiting for him. Before that, a search was carried out in his apartment, during which the things of the dead, two knives, as well as a home-made gun and a set of master keys were found . Everything found during the search during the arrest was laid out on a table in the director’s office and presented to the detainee. The maniac admitted everything, but stated that he did not repent of anything. His testimony was verified and secured during investigative experiments [2] .

The maniac’s wife was also arrested and testified, but denied participation in the act of cannibalism [2] [3] .

On the night of November 7, Johannes-Andreas Hanni hanged himself in a cell in a Tallinn jail. Before that, he wrote three letters to the chief editor of , the investigator and his wife. Forensic psychiatric examination was posthumous, much remained unclear. In modern Estonia, many among the press and criminologists are inclined to believe that the maniac was sane . A dying letter to the investigator, in which the killer admits that he faces death, also speaks in favor of sanity [2] [3] .

Maniac Wife

On February 28, 1983, the Supreme Court of the Estonian SSR found Pille Hanni guilty of complicity and harboring crimes. The prosecutor demanded 7 years in prison for her. But the verdict was more severe - 12 years. Later, the term was reduced to 10 years and 4 months [2] [3] .

She was serving her sentence in a women's colony in Harku . Released in 1993. She changed her first and last name and emigrated to Finland [5] .

In 2008, Pille Hanni published an autobiographical book, I Loved a Predator ( Est. Ma armastasin kiskjat ). This book was a shock for many in Estonia. She was criticized by the psychiatrist , who was among the forensic experts during the investigation in 1982. In his opinion, the maniac’s widow tried to justify her concealment and complicity in her husband’s crimes and present herself as a victim, although in reality her criminal actions were voluntary and deliberate [5] . During the investigation, Pille Hanni explained the concealment of her husband’s crimes with love for him: she admitted that when she found out about the first murder, the intimate relationship with her husband was especially passionate; She also admitted that she agreed to take part in the crime after her husband threatened, in case of refusal, to terminate all relations with her [2] .

According to the psychotherapist of the Tallinn Center for Women Suffering from Domestic Violence , Miriam Puve, the woman had a strong affection for her maniac husband [4] . Perhaps this attachment can be explained by the life of Pille Hanni (Toomla) herself. She was born in a working-class family of four children, was her third daughter, and often wore the clothes of her older sisters. In childhood, she suffered from strabismus , after the operation she wore glasses. She studied at school mediocre, in the 6th grade she remained in her second year, later graduated from evening school . Relations with fanatical believing parents did not work out, at 15 she even lived with her aunt for six months. She first married at 18, the next year she gave birth to a child. But relations with her husband and mother-in-law also did not work out. The marriage broke up when the first husband beat her out of jealousy and left the child with her mother-in-law [2] .
