Biography
He served in the service of the Elector of Mainz, and after the capture of Mainz by the French in 1792 he went to Vienna and entered the State Secret Chancery first, then the Imperial Library.
When, due to his unwillingness to change religion (he was a Protestant ), he was deprived of any hope of promotion and even forbidden to print, at least abroad, the continuation of his historical work, he left Vienna in 1804 and became a historiographer in Berlin , where he was entrusted with writing the story of Frederick II .
After the battle of Jena, Müller, under the influence of a conversation held with Napoleon in Berlin, switched to his side, betraying his former political convictions. He was appointed minister of the new Kingdom of Westphalia , but after that, under the guise of a promotion, he was moved by the chief director of the training department. Bitterly disappointed, Mueller soon died.
In Muller, a rare combination of extremely stubborn industriousness with creative imagination strikes. The merits of his Schweizergeschichte (in the new edition of the Geschichte der Schweiz. Eidgenossenschaft, v. 1–5, Leipzig ., 1786–1808 ) are universally recognized, although they are diminished by a somewhat lack of criticism, not everywhere equally strong descriptions and rough, jerky , sometimes unclear and heavy presentation. The continuation of his work and new editions were undertaken by Robert Glutz von Blotzheim , Johann Jacob Hottinger [5] , Wullimin and Monnar (from Vol. 5 Section 2 to Vol. 15, Zurich , 1816 - 1853 ). From his lectures on world history delivered in private in Geneva , his 24 Bücher allgemeiner Geschichte (Tyubin, 1811 ) was compiled. State reforms of Joseph II prompted Müller to publish Reisen der Päpste (anonymous., Frankfurt , 1782 ), where the clergy is depicted as a stronghold of nations against the tyranny of princes.
His other compositions are: Darstellung des Fürstenbundes ( Leipzig , 1787 ), Briefe zweier Domherrn ( Frankfurt , 1787 ), and Erwartungen Deutschlands vom Furstenbunde (anonymous, ibid., 1788 ). Sammtliche Werke M. (Tyubin., 1810 - 1819 , and Stuttgart , 1831 - 1835 ) were published by Müller's brother, Johann Georg, and his Briefe an seinen ältesten Freund in der Schweiz ( Zurich , 1812 ) - I. G. Fusley .
Müller's biographies were F. Geeren ( Leipzig , 1809 ), Wachler (Marb., 1809; also “Biographische Aufsätze”, Leipzig , 1835 ), Voltman ( Berlin , 1810 ), Roth (Sulzb., 1811 ), Windischman (Winterth., 1811 ), Doering (Zeitz, 1835 ). Correspondence of the brothers I.-Georg Müller and Johann Müller, 1789 - 1809 , ed. Gaugom (Frauenf., 1891)
