William of Salisbury

William Fitz-Walter de Salisbury ( born William FitzWalter de Salisbury ; before 1120 - after July 1, 1143 ) is an English aristocrat, the eldest son of Walter Fitz-Edward , a supporter of Empress Matilda during the civil war in England 1135-1154 .

Biography

Little is known about William's biography. He was the eldest son of Walter Fitz-Edward , feudal Baron and , from his marriage to Sybil de Chaurs (Choworth). Since William in 1141 already participated in hostilities, he was born no later than 1120 [1] .

After the death of King Henry I of Bocklerc , a civil war broke out in England between supporters of the daughter of the late king, Empress Matilda, and his nephew, Stephen Blois . William of Malmesbury mentions William in 1141 as one of Matilda's supporters who besieged Winchester. [1]

According to the Gesta Stephani Regis , William in 1143 participated in the attack of Robert of Gloucester at a convent in Wilton, and then died "after prolonged suffering." He was buried in the clan tomb of the , founded by his father [1] [2] .
