Biography
Anastasia was born and raised in Norilsk . At 13, she moved with her family to Astrakhan . [1] In 2019, she graduated from Astrakhan State Medical University with a degree in dentistry. [2] The nickname “Stace” comes from the name “Anastasia”, the name “Kramer” is taken from the hero of the film “Saw” [3] .
Creativity
The novel “Fifty Days Before My Suicide” was posted by 16-year-old Anastasia on proza.ru. It gained great popularity among the teenage audience: for 2016, the novel was downloaded more than five million times; the publishing house AST published more than 130 thousand copies of the novel [4] . The book takes place in the United States: its heroine, a teenager Gloria (Lori) McFin, tired of problems at home and at school, decides to commit suicide. As the author noted, “Do not even think about the fact that I wrote this story in order to show that suicide is the solution to all problems. This is not at all true. I think that every person at least once thought about suicide. When we feel bad, when we are depressed, when we quarrel with relatives, we are visited by the idea that there is no longer any reason to live like that ... ” [5] . At the end of the book, having survived a series of dramas, the heroine makes a choice in favor of life. In 2016, Stacy Kramer released the book “We Expired”, which was positively evaluated by the audience of the livelib portal and received the title of “Book of the Year” in the “Books for Teens” nomination. In 2019, the sequel to Fifty Days was released - the novel Abyssal [6] .
The scandal surrounding the novel “Fifty Days Before My Suicide”
The book, published in 2015, immediately attracted negative attention: at the request of Rospotrebnadzor they began to withdraw it from bookstores [7] , explaining this with incorrect marking: a novel on this subject should have been marked 18+, while the publisher considered that it belongs to category 16+: the district court of the city of Orel declared illegal and posting books on the Internet [8] [9] . In different cities, more than 20 processes related to the ban of the novel took place [10] . On the whole, Rospotrebnadzor made about 330 decisions related to the book itself, its annotation, and related materials [11] . Particular attention to “Fifty Days” was attracted by an article in the Novaya Gazeta, which claimed that allegedly Internet -based death groups were taking materials for their activities from the novel Stace Kramer. The publishing house tried to appeal the ban of the book [12] . In 2017, the Moscow City Court rejected the arguments of the publisher and found the appeal of the book labeled 16+ illegal [13] . The court motivated its decision with the fact that the book contains positive references to the use of alcohol and drugs. AST has reprinted a novel entitled “50 DDMS: I Choose Life” and with a new label [14] .
Critical ratings
Experts found in the novel "suggestive techniques" suggestions of "negative meanings" [15] . The article by S. Ermachkova “Fifty Days” is given as an example of “modern low-quality literature”: in the novel “debauchery and crime reigns”, drug propaganda is contained [16] . As Evgenia Pasternak noted, “parents already poorly remember the school curriculum. They fear “50 days before my suicide” and forget that everyone at school reads “Romeo and Juliet”. And if in the modern book the heroine remains alive, then Shakespeare all died. Why can the first book lead to suicide, and the second not? ” [17] . ElleGirl commentators have listed “Fifty Days Before My Suicide” as “wonderful books about friendship.” [18] Another reviewer believes that although the story “has nothing to do with fiction,” “a teenager needs psychological support in any form, even in the form of a poorly written book with unrealistic“ realities “and real tips on how to survive” [19] .
