Notes
Diego Corrales v Jose Luis Castillo (English) . BoxRec . Date of appeal April 21, 2019.

Both boxers won their league titles in 2004, Castillo in April, and Corrales in August. It was planned that in December of the same year, the boxers would fight for the unification of the titles, but due to problems in the Corrales team, the fight was postponed to March 2005, and then for the same reason was postponed to May.

The fight was held with varying success. Both boxers worked at short and medium range. During the fight, both boxers managed to shake each other several times. The most striking was the tenth round, during which Corrales knocked down twice, during knockdowns Corrales twice spat out a mouth guard to use the time given to rinse the mouth guard for recovery. Seconds after the second knockdown, Corrales attacked Castillo and shocked him with several punctuated punches, after which the referee of the fight - Tony Weeks intervened and stopped the fight. The victory by TKO in the 10th round was awarded to Corrales.

On October 8 of that year, a rematch took place between Corrales and Castillo. This fight took place with Castillo advantage and ended with his victory by knockout in the 4th round. After that, Corrales held two more fights in which he was defeated, and Castillo continued to perform regularly until 2014. Background

At the time of the fight, both boxers had championship titles, Diego Corrales was the WBO world champion , and Jose Luis Castillo was the WBC [2] .

Castillo was the WBC World Lightweight Champion from June 2000 to April 2002. During this time, he managed to hold three successful defenses of the title, but on April 20, 2002 lost by unanimous decision to Floyd Mayweather Jr. and lost his champion title. On December 7 of that year, a rematch took place between Castillo and Mayweather, which also ended in Mayweather's victory. In 2004, Mayweather Jr. moved to the welterweight and left the league title vacant. The main contenders for the vacant title were Mexicans Jose Luis Castillo and Juan Lazcano . The fight between Castillo and Lazcano for the WBC World Championship title took place on June 5, 2004 and ended in the victory of Castillo by unanimous referee’s decision [3] .

After re-winning the title, Castillo held two successful defenses - on December 4, 2004, he defeated an American of Cuban origin, Hoel Casamayor (31-2), and on March 5, 2005, defeated his compatriot Julio Diaz (30-2) by technical knockout [1] .

Corrales, before moving to lightweight, performed in the second featherweight and at different times owned champion belts according to IBF , WBO, IBA versions. On August 7, 2004, Corrales held a duel against the undefeated Brazilian Aselina Freitas (35-0), for his WBO lightweight world title. The fight lasted ten rounds and ended with the victory of Corrales by technical knockout [4] . After this fight, Corrales did not box for nine months [1] .

Due to disagreements in the Corrales team, the date of his fight with Castillo changed twice, initially the fight was planned to be held in December 2004, then the fight was postponed to March 2005, but in the end it became the final date on May 7, 2005, the venue was chosen as a hotel and entertainment complex Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas . Castillo called the duel with Corrales “The Battle of the Buffalo”, soon this name became the unofficial name for the battle [5]

Match Progress

The fight was held at short and medium distances, boxers practically did not use jabs (direct punches), and the main punches were hook (side kick) and uppercut (kick from below). The first two rounds passed in an exchange of blows, both boxers focused on the actions in the attack, but at the same time practically did not use the defense. In the third round, Diego Corrales increased his activity, and Castillo began to work as uppercuts, which in most cases reached the chin of Corrales [6] .

In the fourth round, Corrales received a small incision above the left eye, the consequences of which were neutralized by his catmen in the interval between rounds. In the following rounds, this dissection turned into a hematoma , and the American's left eye began to close [6] .

In the same 4th round, Castillo got an accentuated blow to the Corrales liver and forced him to increase the distance. But by the sixth round, the duel had again moved to the close range, in the same round a dissection formed over the Mexican's left eye. At the end of this round, Castillo managed to shock the opponent, but failed to build on success due to the end of the round. At the end of the seventh round, Corrales shocked the opponent. After the start of the eighth round, Corrales went on the attack, but Castillo successfully counterattacked and Diego Corrales was forced to spit out the mouthpiece to get a few seconds to recover. The ninth round went more calmly than the rest of the rounds, the boxers continued to work in close combat and clinched from time to time [7] .

Tenth Round

About 20 seconds after the start of the tenth round, José Luis Castillo unexpectedly attacked Corrales, breaking through the accented left side kick, which hit the opponent’s jaw. After this blow, Diego Corrales fell to his side, and the referee opened a knockdown score. At the expense of the "three" Corrales rolled over on his stomach and began to rise. By the time the referee counted to eight, Corrales was already on his feet. At the time of the fall, Corrales spat out a mouth guard for the second time, which again gave him a few seconds for a break. A few seconds after the resumption of the fight, Castillo launched an attack of several punctuated punches, which ended with a left side blow to the jaw, and the American boxer was knocked down again. In the fall, Corrales again spat out the mouthpiece, which was pointed out by the referee of the match Tony Weeks , who for this removed one point from Corrales. In total, it took about 30 seconds of the round to lift and wash the tray, which enabled Corrales to recover and continue the match [8] .

After the resumption of the battle, Corrales went to close range and shot through the accented right blow to Castillo's jaw, then no less strong three left side blows and three blows from the right hand reached the target. After these missed blows, Castillo lowered his hands and rolled his eyes, after which Tony Weeks stopped the fight. The victory was awarded to Corrales with the wording TKO10 ( TKO in the 10th round) [8] .
