History and Description

After the population of both the cities of Dortmund and the then independent city of Hörde increased in a short time during the industrialization of the region, bottlenecks arose in communal networks - in particular, difficulties arose in supplying the population with drinking water , and industrial enterprises with household water. Dortmund's municipal utilities and the Hörde district waterworks were located in the Ruhr Valley, next to the Schwerth drinking water wells. Thus, the water itself was in abundance, but it had to be delivered to the townspeople through the hill of Ardeyk (Ardey).

After the first waterworks were built in Philligst, in 1889 the Hörde communal company acquired a plot of land in Schwerth. Already in 1890, the first pumping station , which had two open reservoirs , was commissioned here. In 1896, the engine room was expanded, and in 1908 the third pumping station in Hengsen began to operate ( Holzwickede district).

But already in 1924, the pumping station in Schwerth was stopped due to the low economic efficiency of the project. Machines and equipment were removed, and the machine room itself was transferred for new use. Use only began in 1976, when the city of Schwerth rented a building and used it for the Spring Fair in Schwerth; the building also became a workshop and warehouse. In 1990, the city administration bought Rormaisterai - a hall measuring 70.24 meters long and 24.32 meters wide with a maximum ceiling height of 11.45 meters - to create a public and cultural center .
