History and Description

The history of St. Victor's church in Schwerth began in 1032 - with the donation of the farm by Matrona Reinmod from Kappenberg (today - the district of Zelm ) to the Xanten Cathedral . In 1050, the church in Schwerth was founded as an auxiliary church at the collegiate church of Xanten [1] . About a hundred years later, the construction of a modern nave followed - the oldest surviving fragment of the building. In the XIII century, the temple was expanded and became a Romanesque basilica . During the heyday of Schwerte as a Hanseatic city - in the 15th century - St. Victor's Church was expanded to a three-nave Gothic hall church . In the same period, the highest bell tower was built, which today is one of the symbols of the city. After the Reformation, the temple became a Lutheran church.

The center of the temple is the Antwerp "golden" altar , created by artists and sculptors from the guild of St. Luke : it was installed on Easter 1523; it contains the relics of St. Victor . The predecessor altar, created in 1518, has not been fully preserved (its predecessor has been preserved). He is one of the few altars known today that were created by Westphalian craftsmen. The fresco of the Crucifixion , also known as the Westphalian master, preserved until 1943 dates from 1310. A baroque pulpit was added in 1666.
