Biography

Born in Argentina in a Jewish family [1] . He studied music from the age of five, his first and only teachers were his mother and father - immigrants from Russia Aida Schuster and Enrique Barenboim (1913-1998), both pianists. Enrique Barenboim's students include Daniel Alfred Wax, Lalo Shifrin , Luis Bakalov and several other famous pianists. The students of Aida Barenboim include Vyacheslav , , George Lepauw and several others.

He gave his first concert in Buenos Aires at the age of seven. In 1952, the family moved to Israel . In 1954, Daniel came to Salzburg to study conducting art with Igor Markevich . Since then he has performed in various countries around the world.

From 1975 to 1989 , the Barenboim led the Paris Orchestra , succeeding George Solti . From 1991 to 2006, he directed, again after Sholty, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra , and in addition, from 1992 became the music director of the Berlin State Opera . Since 2006, he has been the invited director of the orchestra of the La Scala theater in Milan , and since 2011, he has been the chief conductor and music director of this theater.

Barenboim has the citizenship of Argentina and Israel, as well as honorary citizenship of the State of Palestine and Spain; lives in Berlin.

Personal life

In 1967, he married the British cellist Jacqueline du Pre (d. 1987). Her own career due to illness ended already in 1973.

Since the beginning of the 1980s, pianist Elena Bashkirova , daughter of Dmitry Bashkirov [2] , became their companion to Barenboim. They married in 1988. They have two children born during the life of Jacqueline du Pré: David (born 1982) and Michael Barenboim (born 1985), a concert violinist.

As a pianist he debuted in 1952 in Vienna and Rome . He performed in ensemble with violinist Adolf Bush , pianist Arthur Rubinstein , played with conductors such as Wilhelm Furtwengler and Otto Klemperer . The first Barenboim records date back to 1954 . In 1955, he studied composition in Paris with Nadi Boulanger . In 1965 he became the head of the English Chamber Orchestra and recorded with him as a pianist and conductor all Mozart's concerts.

During the period when his wife was Jacqueline du Pré, Barenboim together with her, with violinists Pinchas Zuckerman and Yitzhak Perlman , as well as Isaac Stern and Zubin Meta , performed and recorded exclusively chamber music, most of all - Beethoven , as well as Schubert .

In Seville, Daniel Barenboim, together with Edward Saeed, created the Orchestra, composed of young Arab and Jewish musicians. In collaboration with Said, he wrote the book “Parallels and Paradoxes” (2002).

Repertoire

The repertoire of the Barenboim pianist includes composers from Bach to Boulez and Dutiyo .

Since 1973 , when he made his debut in Edinburgh with Mozart's Don Juan , Barenboim also acts as an opera conductor, in 1981 - 1983 and 1986 - 1999 he was the conductor of the Bayreuth Festival . In addition, as an accompanist, he recorded songs by Mozart, Brahms , List and Hugo Wolf together with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau .

Recognition

The work of Barenboim was widely recognized by the public. He is an honorary doctor of several universities in the world, among his awards:

  • Commander of the Legion of Honor ( 2007 )
  • Wilhelm Furtwengler Prize ( 2003 );
  • Robert Schuman Prize ( 2005 );

Barenboim is a six-time Grammy Award winner [3] (1976, 1991, 2002 as a conductor; 1990, 1994, 2001 as a pianist).

In 2004, he received the Wolf Prize in Israel, which is awarded to scientists and artists "for achievements in the interests of mankind and the cause of peace between peoples", in 2007 he was awarded the Imperial Prize of Japan . Introduced into the Gramophone Magazine Hall of Fame [4] .

He was an honorary flag-bearer of the Olympic flag at the opening of the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
