John Rafailovich Kugel ( 1873 , Mozyr , Minsk province - 1941/42, Leningrad) - Russian journalist. Brother Alexander Kugel .
He studied at the gymnasium in Chernigov , then at St. Petersburg University and the Archaeological Institute.
Editor of the newspaper “ Kievskaya thought ” [1] , “Twinkle”, “Literature and art”, “ Theater and art ” [2] . Over the years, he worked at Krasnaya Gazeta — he was in charge of the evening issue [3] , and was in charge of the department of fiction in both issues. In particular, Leonid Borisov recalled:
Jonah Kugel approved and rejected verses in a very original way ... Tall, gray-haired, short-sighted, never smiling, Kugel brought to his eyes a sheet of paper with a poem, read only two or three lines from above, looked down at the middle of the page and, lowering his gaze, glided down the bottom lines. Then he either returned the poem, saying: “It won’t go,” or folded a sheet of paper four times and stuck it in his bosom, graciously throwing to the person waiting for the end of the magical procedure: “I take” [4] .
He died during the siege of Leningrad at the editorial table.
