External structureLarge bugs with an elongated body up to 20 mm long. The color of the upper side of the body is white or yellowish, the elytra can be spotty. The shield is triangular, black. The underside of the body is dark, covered with hairs. Antenna 3-4 segmented. The proboscis consists of four segments. The wings are usually well developed. The hind legs are longer than the front and middle. There are no odorous glands [1] .
LifestyleThey live in fresh, weakly flowing or stagnant water bodies. Adverse conditions survive either at the adult stage or at the egg stage. 1-2 generations develop in a year. Females of most species lay eggs in the tissues of plants, less often - they are glued to the substrate. When swimming, the abdominal side is facing the top. They feed on aquatic arthropods , less often small vertebrates. Sometimes cannibalism is noted [1] .
Practical ImportanceThey are used for biological control of blood-sucking mosquito larvae . Smoothies are fish food. With a high number of bugs, they eat eggs and juvenile fish and in this case are considered pests of the pond economy [1]
ClassificationA cosmopolitan family that has 11 genera in the world fauna and is divided into two subfamilies [1] :
- Subfamily Anisopinae Hutchinson, 1929
- Anisops Spinola , 1837
- Buenoa Kirkaldy , 1904
- Paranisops Hale, 1924
- Walambianisops Lansbury, 1984
- Subfamily Notonectinae Latreille, 1802
- Aphelonecta Lansbury, 1965
- Enithares Spinola, 1837
- Enitharoides Brooks, 1953
- Martarega White, 1879
- Neonychia Hungerford, 1950
- Notonecta Linnaeus, 1758
- Nychia Stål , 1860
In Russia there are 7 species [1] .
PaleontologyIn the fossil state, the oldest representatives are known from the lower and middle Jurassic of southern Siberia . The separation of the family from other water bugs occurred, probably, on the border of the Triassic and Jurassic [1] .
