Biography
Heinrich was the eldest son of Erich I , Duke of Braunschweig-Grubenhagen, and Elizabeth Braunschweig-Göttingen, daughter of Otto the Evil , Duke of Braunschweig-Göttingen. After the death of his father in 1427, he ruled together with his younger brothers and Albrecht II . Until coming of age in 1437, he was under the care of Otto II, Duke of Braunschweig-Grubenhagen-Osterode. In 1447, hostility broke out between Henry and Landgrave of Hesse Ludwig I. Ludwig I was in alliance with the Archbishop of Mainz and the Dukes of Göttingen. Ludwig and his allies besieged the castle of Grubenhagen, but despite the presence of two guns, they again had to retreat. The attack on Salzderhelden was also unsuccessful. Henry died in 1464 and was buried in the Alexander Palace in Einbek . He was followed by son Henry IV.
Until 1457, Henry III married Margarita of Zagansk (1415 / 25-1497), daughter of Jan I of Zagansk . This was the third marriage for Margarita. They had two sons:
- Otto (b. 1458), died in childhood
- Henry IV (1460-1526), Duke of Braunschweig-Grubenhagen
