History
The first whites to explore the territory of present Boise were French hunters and fur traders. They were attracted here by forests growing in this arid area along the river . From the French word bois (wood, trees) the name came first of the river, and then of the fortification of Boise (about 40 miles (64 km) west of the current city, near the village of Parma, down the river Boise near its confluence with Oregon State Borough Snake River, a fort built by the Hudson's Bay Company in the 1830s, abandoned in the 1850s, but the numerous killings along the Oregon Route prompted the US Army to rebuild the fort in 1863 during the Civil War .
The new construction site was chosen because it was located near the intersection of the Oregon Route with an important road connecting two rapidly developing silver mining areas (the Boise and Ovaichi river basins). In the mid-1860s, Idaho City, located nearby, was significantly larger in population, but Fort Boise, which was advantageously located at the crossroads of transport routes, quickly overtook it, and in 1863 Boise was given the status of a city. The first administrative center of the Idaho Territory was Lewiston in northern Idaho, which in 1863 was the largest city in the Northwest , exceeding the populations of Olympia , Seattle and Portland combined. Idaho was larger than Texas . But after the creation of the Montana Territory , Boise became the administrative center of the significantly reduced Idaho in 1866.
