History and Description
The lower level of the tower, the bell tower of the Church of St. Mary and All Saints in Chekli, dates back to the 12th century; the later, upper part, was already built in the "perpendicular" ( Gothic ) style. The south door, protected by a porch portal , was created around 1300. The nave of the temple is divided into four parts, and the windows on its upper tier are from the 17th century. The southern gallery is higher than the northern one - although both of them belong in part to the 12th century, they were later rebuilt. The pointed arch, finishing the altar from the east, was erected at the beginning of the XIII century. Stained glass in the altar windows was created in the XIV century; The font in the church of Mary is a cylindrical bowl of the 12th century, decorated with carvings with the Lamb of God and triangular patterns.
In the cemetery to the south of the church are three stone cross of the period of the early Middle Ages ; they are close to each other and the researchers believe that they are standing in or near their original places. There is a local legend, according to which the crosses were erected in memory of the three bishops who died in the battle that took place near the village. These crosses are considered one of the best among the surviving Anglo-Scandinavian crosses in the county of Staffordshire. The southern cross is 1.6 meters (5.2 feet) tall, the central cross is 1.35 meters (4.4 feet), and the north cross is 1.43 meters (4.7 feet).
