Biography

He was the Crown Prince of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha from birth to the forced abdication of his father on November 18, 1918. Renunciation was the result of the November Revolution .

Carl Edward hoped to agree on a marriage between Prince Johann Leopold and Princess Juliana , the heiress of his cousin Queen of the Netherlands Wilhelmina . The engagement did not take place, in which Karl Edward blamed his "useless" son [2] .

His first wife was Theodora von der Horst (1905-1991) [3] , whom he married on March 9, 1932. He was forced to renounce his inheritance rights at marriage. The spouses had three children:

  • Carolina Matilda Adelheid Sybil Marianne Erica (born 1933)
∞ 1953 Michael Nielsen (1923-1975), two daughters
  • Ernst Leopold Edward Wilhelm Josiah (1935–1996), committed suicide with his third wife
∞ 1961 Ingebord Hoenig (divorce 1963), son
∞ 1963 Gertrude Monica Pfeiffer (divorce 1985), three sons and two daughters
∞ 1986 Sabina Biller
  • Peter Albert Friedrich Josiah (born 1939)
∞ 1964 Rosita Henrietta Breyer, two sons

February 27, 1962 Johann Leopold and Theodora divorced.

His second wife was Maria Theresa Reindl (1908–1996) [3] , whom he married on March 3, 1963. They had no children.
