Water level - the height of the water surface, measured relative to some constant reference plane (by default, relative to the ordinar ).
The concept of water level is used for natural and artificial streams , reservoirs , as well as trays.
In the European part of Russia, the water level in rivers, according to the hydrological regime, reaches minimum (low) and maximum (highest) levels. In spring, during floods , high water levels are observed. In the fall, water levels rise due to rainfall ( floods ). In winter and summer, there is a decrease in water level ( low water ). Streams and rivers often dry up. In other natural areas, the course of levels may be different, depending on the mode of precipitation and temperature.
Water level is measured at hydrological posts .
The time course of the levels in time is called a hydrograph .
