Biography
Daughter of Karl August Haraldsen and his wife Dagni Ulrichsen. Crown Prince Harald and Sonya met secretly for nine years because of objections to her "non-royal" status. After the heir was determined to give up the right to the throne if he could not marry her, his father, Olaf V , consulted with the government. As a result, the couple married on August 29, 1968 in Oslo . Sonya and King Harald have two children: Princess Martha Louise and Crown Prince Haakon .
After the death of her father-in-law, King Olav V, on January 17, 1991 , at the age of 53, Sonia became Queen of Norway. Norway first gained the queen after the death of Harald’s grandmother, Queen Maud , who happened in 1938 (Harald’s mother, Crown Princess Marta of Sweden , died before her husband Olav V ascended the throne). In 1994, Queen Sonia opened the VI Winter Paralympic Games .
In 2005 , Queen Sonia became the first queen to visit Antarctica . She opened the Norwegian Antarctic Troll Station on Queen Maud Land . The Queen flew in on one of the Royal Norwegian Air Force transport planes landing on the station's airfield.
