Biography
Born in 1925 in the village of Golodaevka (no longer exists), Kiev (now Kuibyshev) district, Rostov region. Russian.
In May 1943 he was drafted into the army. After graduating from the Ufa school of junior commanders, he was sent to the army as a sergeant. He has been at the front since June 1943. The mortar calculation commander of 969 rifle regiment of 273 rifle division 2 of the Ukrainian front. He distinguished himself when crossing the Western Bug and Vistula rivers. He was awarded the Order of the Red Star, the medal "For Courage" (08/31/1944). He was twice wounded. After being wounded in February 1945, he was recognized as a disabled person of group III and demobilized.
After demobilization, he worked as a secondary school teacher in the village of Mechetinskaya (1945-1946).
In 1946 he entered the Moscow Aviation Institute at the Faculty of Aircraft Engineering, received a degree in mechanical engineering.

1959 - 1961 Head of the sector;
1961 - 1970 Head of Department;
1970 - 1972 Deputy Chief Designer of Design Bureau "Yuzhnoye" ;

1990 - 1999 First Deputy Chief Designer for Research, head of the department of design and development;
In 1982, for special merits in the development of rocket science, namely, for the development of nuclear multiple warheads of a military intercontinental missile,
by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR ("closed"), Smetanin Yuri Alekseevich was awarded the title Hero of Socialist Labor. [one]
Member of the creation of military ( R-36M ; RT-23 ) and space rockets. One of the developers of the mortar launch system for combat missiles, the Cyclone , Zenit space systems, one of the initiators of the Sea Launch project.
Along with work in production, since 1966 he taught at the Dnipropetrovsk State University. He was an assistant professor, professor, head of the department "Design and construction of aircraft".
The author of about 200 scientific papers and 50 inventions. Candidate of Technical Sciences (1965), Doctor of Technical Sciences (1978), Professor (1982), Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1988), Full Member of the Cosmonautics Academy named after K.E. Tsiolkovsky (1997).
He was awarded 2 Orders of Lenin (06/17/1961; 11/05/1982), Orders of the October Revolution (04/26/1971), World War 1 degree (11/03/1985), Red Banner of Labor (06/26/1959), 2 Orders of the Red Star (16/09/1959) .1944; 07/01/1953), medals, including "For Courage" (08/31/1944). Laureate of the Lenin Prize (04/21/1976), State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR (1985).
A memorial plaque is installed on the central building of the Yuzhnoye Design Bureau in memory of Smetanin Yu.A.
Died March 30, 1999, during a business trip to South Africa, in an airplane from Johannesburg to Amsterdam.
He was buried at the Sursko-Litovsky cemetery, Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine.
