Also in the pilot took part duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. The Eric B. & Rakim video for the title track from the Follow The Leader album was the first video that was shown on Yo! MTV Raps . Yo MTV Raps and Hip Hop Distribution
The appearance of Yo! MTV Raps in the late 1980s played a decisive role in spreading hip-hop around the world. [1] Thanks to TV channels MTV Europe , MTV Asia and MTV Latino, African Americans and Latin Americans were instantly accessible to millions of people around the world. This helped create a global appreciation and interest in the hip-hop scene, which were celebrated on the 20th anniversary of the Yo! MTV Raps . [2]
Rivalry
Transmission Video Music Box was the first contender. In January 1989, the former rival, BET , created the competition when Rap City premiered (it was a two-hour program, now it's an hour-long show as of July 2009). The show was the longest-running hip-hop program because of its 19-year duration (ending in 2009). While the show is Yo! MTV Raps , which is currently discontinued, mainly focused on the rap scene of the Eastern Seaboard, Rap City also included videos of beginning underground rappers from various US regions.
Down With MTV
One of the most popular artists presented on Yo! MTV Raps , was a group of Naughty by Nature. When MTV launched its Down With MTV ad campaign in 1992, the Naughty by Nature “OPP” hit was taken as the basis.
Censorship and declining popularity
The ratings fell after the 1991 video showing of the song “By the Time I Get to Arizona” (from English - “By the time I get to Arizona”) by the Public Enemy group. Videos found too cruel. Yo MTV Raps was also close to closing, having been denied a video showing the song “How I Could Just Kill a Man” (from English - “How could I just kill a man”) by Cypress Hill . Only after the intervention of the vice president of music development and artists on MTV, Sheri Howell, MTV changed its mind.
Around 1992–93, MTV broadcast Yo! MTV Raps only once a week, for two hours, on Fridays after midnight.
