Biography

Born December 6, 1723 in Stockholm. He was the son of and his wife Virginia Christina Lilliehöök; stepbrother of Chancellor Count .

Carl Sparre was already a close friend of Carl Gustav Tessin and accompanied him in 1739 during the work of Tessin at the embassy in France . Shortly before his departure, he became a volunteer in the Life Guard, and in France became the captain of an infantry regiment, which later became known as the Royal Swedish Regiment . In 1741, Sparre was recalled to Sweden to participate in the Russian-Swedish war of 1741-1743; served as adjutant to Karl Emil Levengaupt and later during the Åland expedition - as senior adjutant to . After the war, he received the rank of lieutenant commander , soon continued to serve as a rider in the South Skon cavalry regiment, after which he became a volunteer in the Prussian service and participated in the Second Silesian War . He participated in the battles of Soor and Kesseldorf .

Upon returning home in 1748, Sparre was appointed major of the and at the beginning of the Pomeranian war he was already a colonel . During this war, he served as deputy chief and commander in chief of the troops, and after the conclusion of peace, Karl Sparre was instructed to return the Swedish troops to Sweden. Shortly after the war, he became colonel of the , and in 1763 - governor of the province of Österbottens . Then he became governor of the province of Yevleborg , finally switching to public service.

Sparre became a member of the "hats" party . In 1773, King Gustav III awarded him the rank of major general and appointed överståthållare in Stockholm . From 1775, Karl Sparre was a member of the National Council until its dissolution in 1789. He was a skilled manager, significantly developing agricultural production in Yevleborg. In these years he was awarded the Order of Seraphim (knight) and the Order of the Sword

Sparre was elected in 1774 by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (member No. 202). During the Italian travel of Gustav III, Sparre was appointed companion of the king. When Gustav III visited Carl Edward Stewart in Florence , Sparre fell in love with Stewart's wife Louise Stolberg-Gedern , but the king was able to prevent their relationship.

On May 8, 1790, Sparre had surgery on his gall bladder, where he had stones. On May 18 he underwent a second operation, and he began to recover. But in December Sparre fell ill again, and died six months later - on June 28, 1791 in Stockholm. He was buried in the Riddarholmen Church .
