Khartoum Massacre

In early June 2019, after the visits of al-Burhan and Mohamed Hamdan “Hemeti” Dagalo to Egypt , the UAE and Saudi Arabia , the Sudanese security forces and quick support forces, including Janjaweed militias, were ordered to suppress peaceful protests in Sudan. What happened on June 3 in Khartoum was called the Khartoum massacre [5] [6] . Dozens of peaceful demonstrators were killed and about forty bodies were thrown into the Nile River, hundreds were tortured, abused and raped in the streets of Khartoum [7] .

Al-Burhan’s negotiations with the opposition to form a united government were canceled. In the following days, the PVS arrested several opposition leaders [8] [9] .

Iyad al-Baghdadi interpreted the decision of the PVA, led by al-Burhan to suppress, as being strongly influenced by the general context in which the leaders of Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt were afraid of democratic movements [10] . Mahmoud Elmutasim, a political activist who graduated from Khartoum University, also said that Saudi Arabia and the UAE are opposed to the existence of democracies in the Middle East, because if “the very idea of democracy is rooted or widespread in the Middle East,” then it will become a threat to ruling regimes Saudi Arabia and the UAE [11] .
