Alcock, Alfred William

Alfred William Alcock ( born Alfred William Alcock ; 1859-1933) - British doctor, naturalist (entomologist, carcologist ) and systematist. He described a large number of species of living creatures, working in different areas of biology.

Biography

Born in Bombay on June 23, 1859 to the family of Captain John Alcock. He studied at School, at Private School and at . In 1876, his father took him to India. In 17 years, visited the Malabar jungle . In 1885 he received a bachelor's degree from the University of Aberdeen . In 1888 he was appointed as a surgeon naturalist of the Indian Marine Service. In 1892 he retired and was appointed Deputy Sanitary Commissioner for East Bengal . From 1893 to 1907, he was director of the Indian Museum and professor at the Bengal Medical College. In 1897, he married Margaret Forbes Cornwall, who was his university student [2] .

Thus, in herpetology, he described five new species of reptiles, some in collaboration with ornithologist Frank Finn [3] .

He also investigated fish, corals, insects (including dipterous). Contributed to medical entomology. In 1901 he was elected a member of the Royal Society of London . In 1905 he published the results of the study of the anopheles mosquito in Calcutta. The author of the textbook Entomology for Medical Officers (Entomology for medical professionals). From 1904 he was an honorary doctor of the University of Aberdeen [4] . He worked on the biography of Sir Patrick Munson [2] .
