Biography

The middle son of Duke Albrecht IV of Saxe-Lauenburg and Beata of Schwerin, daughter of Gunzelin VI, Earl of Schwerin . In 1356, Albrecht succeeded his older brother Johann III as the Duke of Saxe-Bergedorf-Möln, part of the Duchy of Saxe-Lauenburg.

Albrecht V, experiencing financial difficulties, after consultation with his brother Erich III, sold the herrschaff Möln to the city of Lübeck for 9,737.50 Lubeck marks . The parties agreed to buy back, however, only by the duke or his heirs personally, but not as an intermediary for someone else [1] . Lübeck considered this acquisition to be extremely important since Möln was an important hub for trade (especially salt) between Braunschweig and Luneburg (via Lübeck) and Scandinavia. Therefore, Lübeck provided Möln with armed guards supporting law and order on the roads.

Meanwhile, the frugal Albrecht V was mulling over new sources of revenue. Therefore, Albrecht and his cousin Erich II of Saxe-Ratzeburg-Lauenburg agreed to bankrupt the merchants and other travelers passing through their duchies near Hamburg. So, in 1363, the city of Hamburg and Adolf IX , Count of Schauenburg and Holstein-Kiel , with the support of their relative, Prince Archbishop of Bremen Albrecht II, freed the streets north-east of the city from the robbers Albrecht V and Erich II, capturing the castle of Albrecht in Bergedorf .

Until January 25, 1366, Albrecht married Ekaterina Verlskaya (d. After 1402), daughter of Lord Nicholas III, Earl of Verle. Catherine and Albrecht had no children, so he was succeeded by his younger brother Erich III.
