Biography

He was born in 1884 in the village of Zaprudnoye in the Nizhny Novgorod province (now in the Kstovsky district of the Nizhny Novgorod region ). Nikolai Ivanovich’s father, Ivan Grigorievich Chadayev, served as captain at the merchant Ter-Akopov’s enterprise for 25 years [2] .

He graduated from the four-year-old rural school (at the beginning of the 20th century he was the only villager who completed schooling [3] ). He started as a tugboat sailor, where his father was the captain [4] . He was a butterman, sailed three navigations in his father's sailors, then he was a helm pilot.

At the age of 27, he became the captain of the steamboat “Governor Baranov” owned by the “I.N. Ter-Akopov Society” [2] . During the Civil War, Chadayev was the captain of the Lev wheeled steamer [2] , which before the revolution also belonged to the I.N. Ter-Akopov Society, and in the summer of 1918, which became part of the Red Volga Flotilla , was converted into a gunboat . "Leo" participated in the battles for Simbirsk .

Since 1929, N. I. Chadayev - captain of the ship "Stepan Razin" (formerly "Rededeya, Prince of Kosogsky"). One of the first "Stakhanovists" of water transport [2] . Due to technical improvements of the mechanic N. V. Banatov and new towing methods, in 1935 navigation, N. I. Chadayev was the first to conduct a train of 6 oil barges with a carrying capacity of up to 34 thousand tons [1] .

He, along with the mechanic of the ship Batmanov N.V. [~ 1] and the ship's crew, towed heavy convoys in difficult conditions, while maintaining the speed or very slightly reducing it. NI Chadayev achieved such results by applying for heavy-load trains he considered “wake” instead of the usual forms considered “barrel” and “steelyard”. In the navigation of 1935, the crew of the Stepan Razin submarine carried out a record train of 6 barges with 34075 tons of cargo; in 1936 the steamer took 5-6 barges with a total load of up to 40,000 tons. [5]

In the fall of 1935, Nikolai Ivanovich, along with navigators A.K. Kolesov and V.F. Ermakov, participated in the pilotage of ships in the Astrakhan region: at the end of November 1935, a sharp cooling took place in the lower Volga and the river began . At the village of Tyumenki (now Rechnoye ), the passenger ship Profintern and 16 of the largest oil carriers bound for Astrakhan found themselves in ice captivity. It was decided to withdraw these vessels using an icebreaker. From Saratov, the Saratov Icebreaker was hastily equipped for the journey, captain N. I. Chadayev was entrusted with leading his team. In winter, without knowledge of the ship's situation, the icebreaker made its way through the ice-clogged rifts in the lower Volga, and brought ships out to the seaside [6] .
