For centuries, Liege has been a “Mecca” for arms designers from all over the world who came here either on a permanent job or on a business trip to learn the experience of their Liege colleagues. John Browning specifically learned French to live and work here. [1]
Content
History
During the Roman Empire, the city was called Leodius. In 705, the Maastricht bishop Lambert , who was later venerated as a saint, was martyred here. In 721, Saint Hubert moved the center of the diocese here. Under the prince-bishop of Notger (972-1008), the Diocese of Liege became the center of the Maas novel .
In the Middle Ages there was a struggle between guild artisans, the nobility and the clergy for supremacy in Liege. In 1312, supporters of the nobility were burned by the townspeople in the church of St. Martina. In the 15th century, Liege successfully resisted attempts to include him in the Burgundian Netherlands . Twice (in 1467 and 1468), he was devastated by Karl the Bold .
The golden age of Liege came at the beginning of the 16th century, when the episcopal department was occupied by Erard of the Lamarck clan. Under him, Liege became a center for the production of weapons, which by the 19th century had grown into one of the first modern coal mining and steel centers . Subsequently, the contradictions between the bishops and the townspeople escalated. The democratic principles of city governance were finally abolished in 1681. During the wars for the English and Spanish inheritance at the turn of the 18th century, Liege suffered from both the British and the French.
The Liege Revolution (1789) put an end to the political domination of the episcopate. In the years 1795-1815. Liege served as the administrative center of the French department of Hurt . Liege citizens became one of the main forces of the movement for the independence of Belgium (1830). After industrialization, the city was carefully fortified in case of an German attack (1891), however, during both world wars it was under German occupation (see the assault on Liège ).

Important inland waterways pass through Liège: the Meuse River and the Alberta Canal . In 2007, the cargo turnover of the Liege river port amounted to 15.8 million tons (in 2006 - 14.4 million tons), which makes the port of Liege the third largest river port in Europe in terms of cargo turnover (after Duisburg and Paris ) [2]
Air Transport
Liege Airport was founded in 1990 . It is equipped with two runways (3700 and 2340 meters long) and works for both passenger and freight traffic [3] . In 2004, the Liège airport took eighth place in terms of cargo turnover among European airports. Then the airport cargo turnover amounted to 383 837 tons [4] . In 2016, the airport’s cargo turnover amounted to 660 thousand tons (+2% by 2015) [3] .
Passenger turnover amounted to 14,884 departed and 14,507 arriving passengers [5] .
In Liège is the hub of the transport company TNT Express .
Roads
Liege is an important road network hub. Highways E40 , E42 , E25 , E313 pass through the city.
City public transport
City public transport is represented only by buses , although earlier there were also tram and trolleybus networks in the city. Now trams and trolleybuses can be seen only in the city museum of public transport .

Sport
In Liege, one of the strongest football clubs in Belgium is based - Standard , a multiple champion and winner of the country's cup. The Liege club , the first Belgian football champion (1895/96), also plays here, with a total of 5 league titles. In the 2010s, Liège plays in the lower divisions.
In the city stands the basketball club "Liege" , founded in 1967.

Incidents
On December 13, 2011, in the city center, on St. Lambert Square , civilians were shot : 32-year-old Nordin Amrani threw several grenades and opened automatic fire at people at the bus stop, resulting in 5 deaths and 125 injuries [ 7] [8] .
