Grew in Nebraska and California . From the age of 17 he worked in vineyards in the vicinity of Fresno . In 1891 he entered as an assistant to Edward William Nelson , with whom he worked for four years on his first zoological expedition in Mexico and then continued to study Mexican fauna under the guidance of Nelson until 1906; over 14 years, two researchers assembled a collection that included 17,400 mammals and 12,400 birds [2] .

Died of a stroke . Buried at Arlington National Cemetery .
