History

The grenade was developed by Captain Novitsky before the start of World War I and was intended to destroy wire fences and other obstacles and fortifications. On August 19, 1914, the drawing, description and production conditions of grenades were approved by the Technical Committee of the GVTU [2] .

In 1916, the grenade was improved by Warrant Officer Fedorov, some changes were made to its design: the dimensions of the iron case were increased, the wooden handle was replaced with an iron tubular length of 213.5 mm, the trigger mechanism was simplified (the cocked drummer was held down by a lever with a button, a locked check). A wire handle was attached to the handle for carrying. The detonator capsule was unified with a grenade of the Rdultovsky model 1914. [2]

During the civil war, the main reserves of Novitsky's grenades were used up, but they were also used in the Soviet-Polish war . So, in May 1920, the 43rd Infantry Regiment of the 5th Infantry Division of the Red Army under the command of V.I. Chuikov received from the stocks a hundred Novitsky grenades, which were used in battle against the Novogrudok Regiment of the Polish Army 3-5 km east of the town of Lepel [ 1] .

Description

The grenade consisted of a cylindrical tin case with a bursting charge (1.64 kg of pyroxylin with a detonator) and a wooden handle that housed a drummer with a coil spring and a distance tube [2] .

The length of the grenade was 135 mm, and the length of the handle was 213.5 mm. The total weight of the grenade was 2.25 kg [2] .

The mass of the grenade limited the range of its throw and made it difficult to use it in combined arms combat in an open area, but they could be effectively used in trenches [1] .
