Carl Gustaf Pilo ( Swede Carl Gustaf Pilo ; 1711 - 1793 ) is a Swedish portrait painter who worked as a court painter in Sweden and Denmark.

Biography

Born March 5, 1711 in the town of Gekshetter near Nykoping in the family of the artist and his wife Beata Jonsdotter Sahlstedt ( Beata Jönsdotter Sahlstedt ). His grandfather was from Poland and moved to Sweden during the reign of King Charles X Gustav .

At age 12, Pilo was sent to Stockholm to study to be an artist with Christopher Christman. Then he traveled to Germany and two years later - in 1736 he returned to Sweden. After that, he studied at the Royal Academy of Arts with the portrait painter Olof Arenius and continued his education in Germany.

In 1737, Karl went to the province of Skane and stayed there for three years. Here he got a job as a portrait painter, creating portraits of the Skane nobility. He then went to Copenhagen and joined the Danish royal house, where he created a series of portraits of King Fredrick V and Queen Louise. In Denmark, the artist lived from 1740 to 1772. In Copenhagen, he was appointed a court painter, became a professor and then director of the Royal Danish Academy of Arts . In 1741-1745 he was a teacher of drawing in the cadet corps.

In 1756, Pilo became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna , and in 1769 - a member of the Russian Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg .

After the coup of Gustav III in 1772, the Danes were opposed to the Swedes, and Pilo left Denmark. He moved to Helsingborg , and in 1775 settled in Nykoping . Pilo became a member of the Academy of Arts in Stockholm and received an annual pension from the king. Later, in 1777, he became the director of the academy and headed it until the end of his life. For work at the Academy in 1784 he was awarded the Order of the Vase .

He died on March 2, 1793 in Stockholm. He was buried in the city church of St. Clara .

Karl Gustaf Pilo was engaged to Eva Maria Malmgren in 1738. The engagement was canceled on May 5, 1747. January 5, 1750 in the castle of Maltesholm, the artist married Charlotte Amelie Dorothé Desmars ( Charlotte Amélie Dorothée Desmars ).

The artist's fruitful work in Denmark consisted mainly of portraits of the royal family and nobility, but also included genre paintings in the Dutch style. For over two decades, Carl Gustaf Pilo has been recognized as an outstanding portrait painter in Denmark.

By order of King Gustav III, he painted the monumental painting “The Coronation of Gustav III in the Church of St. Nicholas ”.
