Trinket

Tritium keychain with a faint glow.

Trinket (from fr. Breloque [1] ) - accessory, decoration, made in the form of pendants on a chain, bracelet, key ring and more. Usually used for decorative and promotional purposes. The key fob helps reduce the probability of losing keys, by increasing the size and weight of the bundle. The key ring can also perform an additional useful function, for example, it can be a mini-flashlight, remote control for a car, a bottle opener, a powder box, and so on. Key chain is a typical souvenir or gift .

History

The history of trinkets goes back to deep antiquity, it is known that they were extremely fashionable in the XVIII century and until the second half of the XIX century . Dandy wore them on chains for hours. Every self-respecting dandy had on his chain more than ten trinkets of various materials, mostly gold. These trinkets often had a fancy shape and were decorated with great sophistication by various materials: ivory, precious stones, enamel. Among the dandy aristocrats, their own rules of combination of keyfobs and their wearing were developed. Trinkets from an elegant gentleman slightly jingled, attracting the attention of surrounding women. But already in the middle of the XIX century, the number of key chains on the chain decreased to 2-3, and they began to be perceived more as souvenirs-memories, for example, a key chain for the memory of a woman he loved.

Gradually trinkets as jewelry completely stopped wearing. In the XX century, they began to be used with practically only one utilitarian purpose - as a suspension for a keychain. But in this capacity, the key chain still remained popular with designers - there appeared trinkets-amulets, trinkets-souvenirs. Combining trinkets with various functional items, the designers created trinkets-whistles, trinkets-flashlights, trinkets-roulettes and numerous trinkets-openers. At the beginning of the XXI century, a new type of keyfobs appeared - flash-drives, and also the use of keyfobs as jewelry for mobile phones became popular.

Usage

In colloquial speech, there is a truncated form of key chains [1] [2] , but it does not correspond to the historical literary norms of word usage existing in the Russian language. It is necessary to speak and write: small charms; amber inlay charms; hang charms on the watch chain; give charms. Similarly, with the declination of the cases: the literary norm - a key fob, a key ring, a key ring, on a key ring; conversational - keychain, keychain, keychain, on the keychain.

This situation is due to the fact that the word “keychain” is derived from the French breloque [1] , therefore, “ok” in the word “keychain” was originally part of the root , not a suffix . The latter can be challenged by the use of a diminutive form of "trinkets", where the "glasses" suffix (instead of "trinkets"), and a link to the root in another language is not relevant (for example, "clips", "clip"). The Orthographic Dictionary of the Russian Academy of Sciences, edited by V.V. Lopatin altogether proclaims the form of a key fob and a key chain as equivalent.

You have money, eat three throats, buy a woman's silk stockings for comfort, but use your brain balls to do engineering for the benefit of the world revolution! ”And he does.
