Life

Catherine was the daughter of Duke Henry IV of Braunschweig-Wolfenbuttelsky (1463-1514) and Catherine (1465-1526), daughter of Duke Eric II of Pomerania .

November 20, 1509 in Wolfenbüttel, she married the Duke of Magnus I of Saxe-Lauenburg (1470-1543). Her father convened parliament in 1509 to introduce a special tax because he was unable to pay his daughter’s dowry alone. Only after long negotiations did the parliament agree to introduce an additional tax in order to raise money for the dowry and jewelry for the princess.

Catherine was an ardent Catholic and maintained close ties with her relative from Braunschweig. This prompted the King of Sweden, Gustav I Waz, to marry one of her daughters in an attempt to prevent the German Catholic princes from supporting King Christian II of Denmark. [2]

When her son was about to marry, she entered into negotiations with his future mother-in-law Catherine of Mecklenburg , without knowledge and to the detriment of the head of the Vettin family, Johann Friedrich of Saxony [3] .

Children

Catherine had six children:

  • Franz I (1510-1581) ∞ 1540 Sibylla of Saxony (1515-1592)
  • Dorothea (1511-1571) ∞ 1525 Christian III, King of Denmark and Norway (1503-1559)
  • Catherine (1513-1535) ∞ 1531 Gustav I Vase, King of Sweden (1496-1560)
  • Clara (1518-1576) ∞ 1547 Franz, Duke of Braunschweig-Luneburg (1508-1549)
  • Sofia (1521-1571) ∞ 1537 Anton I, Earl of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst (1505-1573)
  • Ursula (1523–1577) ∞ 1551 Henry V, Duke of Mecklenburg (1479–1552)
