Named by analogy with a herbaceous plant, the acanthus from the acanthus family , growing in the Mediterranean . The shape of its leaves , with several sharp ends, served as the basis for the drawing.
The motive arose in ancient art. In a stylized form, it was widely met in Greek, Roman and Byzantine architecture , art . During its existence, the acanthus as an element of ornamentation has undergone many changes, especially the acanthus has changed in the Middle Ages and in the New Age.
