“ The Opening of Misty Beethoven ” is the American pornographic comedy film of 1976. It was released with a rather large budget and filmed in carefully thought-out places in Paris, New York and Rome with musical accompaniment and owes much to director Radley Metzger (in the credits under the name “Henry Paris”) [1] [2] [3] . According to award-winning writer Toni Bentley, “The Discovery of Misty Beethoven” is considered the “crown jewel” of the pornographic era (1969–1984) [1] [2] .

Story
The plot is based on the play by George Bernard Shaw “ Pygmalion ” and the musical “ My Fair Lady ” derived from it. The film is about a sexologist who is trying to turn a cheap street prostitute into a goddess of passion. While he is preparing the patient for the seduction of the gay artist (Casey Donovan), she has feelings for the doctor. In the film, Henry Higgins from Pygmalion is replaced by Dr. Seymour Love, the sexologist played by Jamie Gillies. [3] Eliza Doolittle (from Pygmalion) becomes Dolores “Misty” Beethoven, played by Constance Mani [3] , and Colonel Pickering becomes Geraldine Rich, played by Jacqueline Bodan. Throughout the film, Misty reaches the “rise” more than Love and Rich hoped, and then leaves, as in George Bernard Shaw’s play. However, in the film, Misty returns, takes on the role of Dr. Love and runs the "school." Dr. Love is present, but in a very dependent position. It is clear that by this time Misty is responsible for everything.

Interesting Facts
The film was released during the “golden age of porn” (which began with the release of Andy Warhol in 1969) in the United States, during the “ porn ” [4] [5] , when erotic films for adults were just beginning to be released everywhere publicly debated by celebrities (such as Johnny Carson and Bob Hope [6] ) and taken seriously by film critics (such as Roger Ebert ) [7] [8] .
Most films shot in the era of porn, had a minimum of storyline. The plot of "Misty" is more thought out than most; it is based directly on the play by George Bernard Shaw “Pygmalion”, as well as on the Broadway and Hollywood success of the musical “My Fair Lady”. Some historians believe that “The Discovery of Misty Beethoven” reaches the mainstream level in the storyline and scenery [9] [10] . The writer Tony Bentley called the film “the pearl of the crown” of the pornographic era [1] [2] . The film is also satirical, it includes many comic gestures and dialogs, added specifically to create a humorous effect. It includes the first role of Mark Margolis . “The Discovery of Misty Beethoven” was the first widely published porn film to show pegging men by women [11] .
The Italian edition of Noctuno is an extended version of Misty Beethoven with frames not shown in the original film. Some additional footage was used in the films Radio Barbara (episode with Misty's binding ) and Maraschino Cherry (Misty with a matador). All other cut scenes can be found on the expansion pack for the Distribpix Misty Beethoven DVD. Initially, the film was rejected for British distribution by the British Film Classification Council (BBFC) and released in a heavily edited form with an additional 1 min 55 sec censorship cuts in 1983. The full hardcore uncensored version was adopted by the BBFC with a rating of R18 in 2005. According to rumors, the full uncircumcised version was released in the USA on Laser Disc by Lorimar Home Video. It also says that Laser Disc Print has a duration of 87 minutes and a ratio of 1:33. Several scenes have been added to the softcore version to fill the time. Among them are: servants having fun in an Italian villa dressed as cavemen, Lawrence and Barbara, watching Kojak on TV, Misty and Geraldine together in the bath, and a cigar guy’s partner on the plane, talking to a dejected Seymour Love.
In one scene, a dialogue takes place between Misty and Seymour, but he is hard to hear, as he is drowned out by a flight attendant talking with a passenger. The beginning and end of the dialogue are heard, but the middle is almost inaudible. Surprisingly, the script missed the words - heard - Misty: "it will be strange to return to the States." Seymour: “First trip?”, Then inaudible: Misty: “No, I traveled with my brother when I was 16 years old. I was dancing. I learned a lot on this trip ”; then you hear: Seymour: "Well ... you will learn a lot on this trip."
Remastering
In 2012, DistribPix oversaw the full restoration of the film with the full cooperation of the director. The result was a limited screening in movie theaters, but the main outcome of the project was the first ever official version for DVD and Blu-ray . In addition, a fully annotated CD soundtrack has been released. A list of music from the soundtrack for the film [12] [13] was previously released.

Remake
In 2004, a musical remake of Misty Beethoven: The Musical! . The film starred Sunset Thomas , Randy Spears , Julie Meadows , Asia Carrera , Chloe , Dave Cummings , Mike Horner , Evan Stone and Tyce Bune. The director was Veronica Hart . The film received the 2004 XRCO Award in the category "Best Comedy or Parody" [21] and the 2005 AVN Awards in the category "Best Sex Comedy" [22] .
