Biography
Sugita graduated from Tottori University in 1990. [3]
Before becoming a member of the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan, she worked as a civil servant in the city of Nishinomiya, a member of the Japanese Renaissance Party and the Next Generation Party. [four]
After unsuccessful participation in the 2014 elections in the 6th district of Hyogo Prefecture (gaining the smallest number of votes among all candidates [5] ) as a member of the Japanese Kokoro Party, Sugita replaced the party by joining the Liberal Democratic Party. She then ran for the Chugoku Proportionate Bloc as a member of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), and the LDP made her representative without the need to directly rely on direct elections.
Sugita married at 26 years old for an engineer. They have a daughter. [6]
Political career
Kindergartens
In July 2016, Sugita wrote an article in Sankey Shimbun , in which she spoke out against increasing the number of kindergartens. [7]
Woman Comfort
In 2013, Sugita joined other members of the Japan Restoration Party, Yuzuru Nishida and Hirom Nakamaru, in the Los Angeles-based Japan Revival Study Group, with a request to remove the statue in Glendale , Los Angeles County, California. The statue commemorates 200,000 " consoling women " from Korea and other countries, "which Japanese soldiers brought to sexual slavery during World War II." [8] Opponents of the statue, including Sugit, stated that “the women acted voluntarily” and that the number of their applicants was too high. [9] [10] The three politicians also stated that they wanted the Japanese Foreign Ministry to withdraw apologies made in the 1990s to reassure women. [9]
Shiori It rape case
Sugita appeared in the BBC documentary in 2018 The Secret Disgrace of Japan [11] , which described in detail the alleged rape of Shiori Itu. In an interview with Sugit, she said: “In this case, as a woman, there were obvious mistakes from her side: to drink so much before a man and lose memory.” [12] She continued: "With such things, it seems to me, men suffer significant damage." [13]
Sugita seemed to make fun of Itō, " Makura eigyo daishippai " ( sales skill of pillows: complete failure). [14]
When the Mainti Shimbun newspaper asked for a commentary on the documentary, Sugita stated that the film had been edited in such a way that it distorted her intentions, and she considered the release of her own video of the interview. [14]
Sugit has been criticized by Lully Miura, a lecturer at the Institute for Policy Alternatives Research at the University of Tokyo, who wrote: “Behavior, as if doubting the actions of the victim, not the criminal, will spread the misconception that nothing can be done if something happens to a woman when she gets drunk in front of a man. It seems that there is a feeling of hostility towards women who are resolutely talking to men, which is inherent in the Sugita position. [14]
LGBT issues
In 2015, Sugita appeared on the Japanese television channel Sakura on the television program “ Hi Izuru Kuni Yori”, along with music composer Koichi Sugiyama and fellow politician Kyoko Nakayama, in which she stated that there was no need for LGBT people to learn in schools, rejecting concerns about the high suicide rate among the community. [15] [16] In July 2018, Sugita wrote an article in the journal in which LGBT couples are described as “unproductive,” because they cannot bear children and, therefore, are not worth the taxpayers ’investment. [17] Her comments were condemned by various prominent Japanese politicians, including former Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama , when thousands of protesters gathered outside the headquarters of the Liberal Democratic Party on July 27, 2018 to demand her expulsion from the party. [18] Two months later, a group of LGBT politicians and civil rights leaders demanded that she be responsible for her comments. [nineteen]
