Zion Latif Williamson ( born Zion Lateef Williamson ; born June 6, 2000 in Salisbury , North Carolina , USA ) is an American professional basketball player , player of the NBA New Orleans Pelicans team, selected under the first number of the 2019 draft, played at the student level for the Duke Blue Devils team.

Student career

Zion Williamson played his first Duke match on August 15, 2018 against the Ryerson University basketball team of Canada. He made a double-double of 29 points and 13 rebounds, and also scored 3 of 4 three-point shots [1] . Before the start of the season, Zion was included in the list of applicants for awards: John Woodden Prize , Naismith Prize for the best player of the year among students [2] [3] . In the first match of the regular season against Kentucky , played on November 6, 2018, he scored 28 points in 23 minutes of playing time [4] . In the next game of the season against the basketball team of the US Military Academy, Williamson scored 27 points, took 16 rebounds, made 6 block shots. [5] . He became the second player in history to account for at least 25 points, 15 rebounds, 5 block shots [6] . Subsequently, Zion was recognized as both a player and a rookie of the week of the ACC conference [6] .

The official NCAA 2019 basketball tournament broadcast broadcaster CBS made a special camera called the “Zion Cam” to record Williamson's performances throughout the tournament. [7] On March 22, he scored 25 points in a victory match against the North Dakota State [8] . On March 24th, Zion Williamson made a double-double of 32 points and 11 rebounds in a duel in which Duke was stronger than Yu.S. Ef [9] . In the East Region finals, Zion again had a double-double of 24 points and 14 rebounds, but his team lost to the Michigan State and did not reach the Final Four of the NCAA 2019 [10] . He became the third freshman in history after Kevin Durant and Anthony Davis , who simultaneously scored 500 points, made 50 interceptions, made 50 block shots in one NCAA season [11] .

On April 15, 2019, Zion Williamson announced that he was running for the NBA draft. [12] On June 20, Williamson was selected in a draft under the first number by the New Orleans Pelicans team [13] .
