Biography
Member of the Wittelsbach House; the second son of the Elector of the Palatinate, Philip and his wife Margarita of Bavaria .
Philip successfully defended the diocese of Freising during the unrest of the peasant war in Germany . He managed to keep the Bavarian princes from interfering in the politics of the bishopric. He initiated many construction projects in the diocese.
In 1512, he was appointed coadjutor of the Bishop of Naumburg, Johann III von Schoenberg. After the death of Johann, Philip was appointed bishop of Naumburg . He spent ten months in Naumburg. After that, Freising became its main residence again, while Naumburg was mainly managed by its administrators. Since he used the location of the Vettin's house, he was moderate to Martin Luther . After the death of the elector of Saxony Frederick III and the growing opposition of the citizens of Naumburg and Zeitz , Philip no longer came to the bishopric. He was tired of management and tried to find a successor.
Philip of Palatinate was buried in the Freising Cathedral.
