Background
Even before the end of the 1895 tournament in Hastings, it became clear that the question of who is the strongest chess player in the world had not only not been clarified, but had become even more difficult. According to the results of the tournament, the world champion Lasker took only third place, passing ahead M. Chigorin and previously little-known G. Pilsbury . Therefore, the idea came up to hold in St. Petersburg a match tournament of five winners of the Gasting tournament - Lasker, Steinitz , Pilsbury, Chigorin and Tarrash . Tarrash refused to participate in connection with employment in his main job.
Summary
Pilsbury and Chigorin played very unevenly and took third and fourth places respectively. Lasker won, whose championship after this tournament no one disputed. Steinitz, who took second place, after the end of the tournament called Lasker to a rematch , which took place in Moscow and ended in a victory for Lasker with a crushing score + 10-2 = 5.
