Biography

Born around 1040. From a young age, he worked in the Kiev Pechersk Monastery (later Lavra) under the supervision of the Monk Theodosius and was his favorite pupil [5] [6] . Stefan held the position of domestic (the head of the choir) and often taught the brethren on behalf of the father of Theodosius [7] [6] [8] .

In 1074, the rector of the Kiev-Pechersk monastery Theodosius, at the request of the monastery brethren, before his death, appointed Stephen the hegumen of the Kiev-Pechersk monastery, instructing him to sacredly preserve the monastery’s charter and finish the construction of the already-built large church [9] . Stefan finished the construction of the church on a draft, moved his brotherly cells to new places, closer to the church, built a wooden wall around the new monastery and set up an extensive courtyard for strangers [6] [10] [11] .

In 1078, having been the head of the Kiev-Pechersky monastery for about three years, due to unknown reasons, Stefan Pechersky, at the request of the monks, was forced to lay down his leadership over the monastery and even retire from the monastery, not having time to finish the bequeathed building [6] . He prayed for people who created confusion in the words of his fellow martyr: β€œ Lord, do not make them sin this! " [12] [13] .

Soon he founded a new , on another spur of the Pechersk Mountain, in the tract called Klov . Generous donations made it possible to quickly build a new monastery (in 1240 the monastery was destroyed by the hordes of Batu Khan) [14] [6] .

Around 1090, Stefan Pechersky was promoted to bishop of Vladimir Volynsky and was present in the new dignity with the transfer of the relics of his teacher the Monk Theodosius to the monastery [15] [16] [6] .

Stefan Pechersky died on April 27, 1094 [6] . The memory of St. Stephen is honored on April 27 [6] both in the Cathedrals of the Galicia (on the third week of Pentecost) and the Kiev (July 15) saints [17] .
