Short Biography

He wrote poems at school, showed them to Mikhail Svetlov , but, having received “cautious feedback” from him, he did not publish them either then or after. He participated in school olympiads in literature at Moscow University , received in 1957 the first prize [2] .

He failed at admission to the philological faculty of Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov in 1957, received an appeal from the dean R.M. Samarin .

He moved to Minsk , enrolled in the faculty of Belarusian State University and, having studied there for a semester, transferred to the Moscow Polytechnic Institute named after N.K. Krupskaya . In those same years, Kamil Ikramov , Oleg Chukhontsev , Vladimir Voinovich began to study there.

In 1959, as a result of an accidental acquaintance with R. A. Bykov , who was then the main director of the Student Theater of Moscow State University , a student at the Moscow Polytechnic Institute George Polonsky became the head of the literary part of this theater. After graduating from the Moscow Institute of Contemporary Art, he taught English, as well as Russian language and literature, for a short time. He left his career as a teacher in 1965 and concentrated on drama: he entered the Higher Screenwriting Courses in the studio of I. G. Olshansky, one of the best playwrights of Soviet cinema. The thesis of Polonsky was the script of the film “ Let 's Live Until Monday ”, which later became a cult.

From 1979 to 1988, he wrote fairy tales addressed, in his words, to "adults who have not yet forgotten their childhood." His plays “Don't Leave ...” and “Nobody Believes”, according to which Leonid Nechaev made the films “ Don't Leave ” and “ Red, Honest, in Love, ” were especially widely known. Polonsky’s works are distinguished by their originality and deep disclosure of modern feelings and emotions of people, especially young people, in fictional heroes living in fictional reality.

Love of poetry had a profound effect on Polonsky's work. Through poetry (written for his heroes by the author himself), the beauty and suffering of their lyrical, romantic souls are revealed.

Polonsky often acts as a publicist, comprehending in the press and on the radio those moral, pedagogical, philosophical problems that are present in his works [3] .

G.I. Polonsky died of heart failure on September 21, 2001 . He was buried in Moscow at the Don cemetery .
