Biography

Daughter of the King of Burgundy, Conrad I and his second wife, Princess Matilda of France [1] . Her mother was the daughter of the king of the West-Frankish kingdom of Louis IV and the niece of the King of Germany, Otto I [2] .

First marriage

Around 978, Herberg married Hermann I, Count Werl [3] . They had three sons [4] :

  • Hermann II, Count Werl (c. 980-1025)
  • Rudolf Werl (approx. 982 / 6-1044)
  • Bernard I Werl (c. 983-1027)

Herman died between 985 and 988 years.

Second marriage

In 988, Herberg remarried Herman II, Duke of Swabia [5] . In the second marriage, she had several children, including:

  • Matilda of Swabian , was married successively to Conrad of Carinthia and Frederick II, Duke of Upper Lorraine [6]
  • Gisela of Swabian , who became Queen of Germany and Empress of the Holy Roman Empire [6]
  • Herman III , who succeeded his father in 1003, but died young in 1012 [6]
  • Berthold (992-993)
  • (?) Beatrice (died after February 25, 1025), was married to Adalber of Carinthia [6] [7]

Gerberg died in Nordgau, Bavaria . An obituary entry indicates that she died on July 7, probably in 1018 or 1019 [8] .

Trustee

In September 997, at the request of Herberga, Otto III presented the Shtockhausen estate to a convent in Meshed [9] . Stockhausen was located in the medieval district of Lochtrop, which was part of Werl county. In 997, Werl was ruled by the son of Gerberg from his first marriage, Herman II. The counts of Werl had long-standing ties with this monastery [10] . Earlier, Count Hermann I was the protector of Meschede, as was one of his ancestors, also bearing the name Hermann, in 913. Meschede may have been founded by Akhilid, one of the ancestors of Herman, who lived in the 9th century.

In May 1000, Otto III issued a certificate, taking the Odingen convent under his protection [11] . The testimony states that Odingen, who was located in Lochtrop County in Werl County, was founded by Gerberg with the permission of her son Herman II, Count Werl. In 1042, Gerberga's granddaughter, also Gerberg (daughter of Herman II), became the prioress of Odingen.
